Sometimes, after a day of work or just a long day with friends or family, it’s nice to just sit back, relax, maybe light up a J and watch some shows on TV. Smoking weed and watching cartoons can go hand-in-hand for some people.
Justin Roiland’s “Rick and Morty” brings a breath of fresh air back to adult cartoons, and gives some very smokeable content. Back in the day, you’d be flipping through some channels, and you may have come across some classic adult cartoons. “Family Guy,” “American Dad,” “The Simpsons,” “South Park” and other cartoons like them are all relatively old shows, already past the 10th season mark. To many people, the jokes from these cartoons may be getting old and repetitive.
If you’ve always been a cartoon junky, chances are you’ve watched “Adventure Time.” Although a great show, it is definitely a show in which its target demographic is children. There may be those innuendos here and there, but that’s just sometimes. If you’ve watched Adventure Time, it is likely you have come across The Earl of Lemongrab and his signature “UNACCEPTABLE!” line, in that signature high voice. The voice actor of this very annoying character is none other than Justin Roiland, the genius behind the Adult Swim show “Rick and Morty.”
Rick and Morty’s main characters are obviously Rick and Morty. Rick is Morty’s alcoholic, scientist grandfather, while Morty is a young, not so popular high school kid going through puberty. Though being his grandfather, Rick is Morty’s only true friend. Also in the show is Morty’s family which includes his older sister Summer who always looks for ways to be popular, his insecure and unemployed father Jerry and his breadwinning, borderline alcoholic mother, Beth.
The show features Rick and Morty’s whacky adventures, bringing them to different dimensions and planets. It often goes by a two story format, meaning while one group of characters are doing something somewhere else, the other group is having somewhat of an adventure of their own. These two stories usually link up in the end, almost always ending each episode on a hilarious note.
If you love the universe and its mysteries, Rick and Morty is the show for you. The creators, Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, made a point of making the show consistent while also introducing the concept of different dimensions and timelines. Just take a look at the very first scene of the series.
Rick and Morty’s characters although extremely wacky and zany, are surprisingly relatable on very many levels. The parents who constantly fight while everyone wonders why they’re married. The annoying older sister, always trying to prove she is the better sibling. The pubescent boy, trying to get himself some pussy. And finally, the estranged grandfather with a mysterious past who can travel to different worlds and dimensions. These characters make for a hilarious show that will make you think about your place in the universe.
Rick and Morty ended their last season on October 5, 2015, leaving fans hungry for more. Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland had promised a new season of the show. And finally, a year after the season finale of season 2, adult swim put up videos on youtube revealing some scenes, without the animation.
For those of us who have been waiting, this is fantastic news, and season 3 is scheduled to be released sometime within the year of 2017, though the exact date the first episode will air is yet to be announced.
