The main cast of Bojack Horseman

Bojack Horseman is about, well, a half-horse, half man. Don’t worry, it’s normal in this show.

The Story Obviously Follows Bojack, a Hollywood actor made famous from his hit sitcom “Horsin’ Around” and that’s about all he’s famous for. Bojack is an insecure and alcoholic celebrity who loves to do drugs. Yes, that’s probably the best definition you could think of for him, but it’s important for the message that the show delivers.

The show begins with a quick scene from Bojack’s show “Horsin’ Around” and goes straight into a live interview where he, of course, mentions that he is drunk. He begins to defend his show “Horsin’ Around” and shows why he believes that people enjoyed it so much by stating “For a lot of people life is just one long, hard kick in the urethra, and sometimes when you get home from a long day of getting kicked in the urethra you just wanna watch a show about good, likeable people, who love each other where you know, no matter what happens at the end of 30 minutes, everything’s gonna turn out okay.”

The reporter then follows up by asking what Bojack was doing now after “Horsing

Around’s” cancellation 18 years ago, to which Bojack has no answer.

That one scene kind of sets the tone for the rest of the series, Bojack is a one-hit-wonder struggling to find things to do in his spare time, and just wanting to earn his fame back again. Bojack Horseman answers the age long question “If they’re famous and rich, why aren’t they happy?” Many times we hear in the news something about how a celebrity begins to break down and completely lose it, but can never understand why. They have money, and they have millions if people who adore them, yet they aren’t happy. Of course, I don’t mean every single celebrity, but you get the picture.

Bojack Horseman basically took the mind of a depressed celebrity going through an existential crisis and turned it into a cartoon with pretty colors.

Though it may sound depressing, it is actually a fantastic show for people who really like to think. Providing tons of inspirational quotes while you think “Why the hell would he do that?!?!” where even the strongest character can begin to crack and the most idiotic character can make sense.
